School Health Champions Recognized by the NC School Community Health Alliance

The NC School Community Health Alliance recognized two school health champions this week at the Alliance’s annual conference in Raleigh.  David T. Tayloe, Jr., MD, FAAP, Goldsboro Pediatrics, was presented a Lifetime Achievement Recognition in a joint recognition from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the NC Pediatric Society, The School Nurse Association of North Carolina and the NC School Community Health Alliance.  Steve Shore, NCPS Executive Director and Peter J. Morris, MD, FAAP, NCPS Past President, represented the NCPS at the presentation.  Immediate Past President Clementine Buford of the School Nurse Association and Phyllis Hill of the Wayne Initiative for School Health (WISH) in Goldsboro also gave remarks.  Connie Parker, Executive Director of the Alliance called Dr. Tayloe a “supreme champion” for advancing school-based or school linked health services in North Carolina.  Jane Meschan Foy, MD, FAAP, Wake Forest University Health Sciences was also recognized by the Alliance for her contributions to school health services.   Shore presented an award to Foy from the American Academy of Pediatrics from the AAP’s Adolescent Health Partnership for “Promising Practices Promoting Adolescents’ Strengths” in conjunction with Foy’s work with the School Health Alliance for Forsyth County.  Stephanie Daniel, PhD, UNC-Greensboro and a  Board member for the Alliance, also gave remarks. 


Steve North, MD, MPH, a family physician with Bakersville Community Health Center in Mitchell County, is the Board Chairperson for the Alliance. NCPS members Tamara Coyne-Beasley, MD, MPH, FAAP, UNC Department of Pediatrics, and Olson Huff, MD, FAAP, Sixty Second Parent, also participated as speakers at the 2-day conference.  There are 53 school-based or school–linked health centers across North Carolina, with several having affiliations with health departments, pediatric or family medicine practices.  Several expansions are in the works with sponsorship by hospitals and FQHCs.
